mehFILM: Kaathal - The Core (2023)

Hello

Today, I would like to talk about 2023 Malayali film Kaathal - The Core which was directed by Joe Baby.

GENRE: Family Drama
DURATION: 114 Minutes

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The film centres the character of Matthew Devassy who is a retired bank secretary and lives happily in a small town with his wife, Omana, daughter, Femy, and old father, Devassy. He enters into village politics reluctantly and participates in by-election. He is a well-respected citizen of his town, and everything looks fine in his life. And suddenly, he comes to know that his wife Omana has filed a petition for divorce stating the allegation that Matther is homosexual. Now, this is a huge challege for Matthew to overcome. It is difficult for his social and political image, but more than that, his own love and feelings for Omana are at stake. He doesn't want to separate himself from Omana.

Will he be able to prove himself and save his marriage? What will happen to his electoral candidature? How will town-people accept him after such a stigmatized allegation on him? I advise you all to see the movie to get these answers.

WHY SHOULD WE WATCH IT?

This movie doesn't have action sequences to entice the audience. This movie stands on the strong soldiers of Mammooty (Matthew Devassy) and Jyothika (Omana). Both of them have done exceptionally good acting and justified their respective characters through their performance.

The film handles the theme of homosexuality is a very subtle and empathetic manner. In spite of stigma associated with the homosexuality, director handles the film quite neutrally. Credit should also go to Mammooty, who decided to do such a role going against his on-screen image.

Film very cleverly weaves the politics of the small-town and makes it an interesting political challenge for the protagonist to deal with.

This is very simple film dealing with really sensitive subject and elevated by the performances and the treatment. If you like to see serious movies dealing with serious and real life issues, you must see this film. I give 8 out of 10 stars to the film. The film is available on Prime Video.

That is all for today! Please comment and let me know your reposnse to this film!

Thank you!

Mikhail Bakhtin and his Dialogic Imagination

Book: The Dialogic Imagination: Four Essays (1981) Author: M. M. Bakhtin Translated by: Caryl Emerson & Michael Holquist Edited: Michael Holquist Austin & London: University of Texas Press "The Dialogic Imagination: Four Essays" by Mikhail Bakhtin is already considered a classic not only from the perspective of literary genre but also as an important work on the philosophy of language. The present book contains the four essays: 1. Epic and Novel, 2. From the Prehistory of Novelistic Discourse, 3. Forms of Time and of the Chronotope in the Novel, 4. Discourse in the Novel and an Introduction and Glossary by the editor. The essays are a commentary on the  historical development of novel form and how it is different from the other literary form. His argument is that as the novel form is different from the other literary forms, we need a different type of stylistic and poetic analysis and dogmas for that in order to truly evaluate the Novel. He tries ...

Maqbool: Adaptation of Macbeth

Many films have been made from the plays of William Shakespeare. When a literary work or a part of a literary work is used as a base for a film or TV Series, it is called adaptation. It is a form of Translation, known as Transmutation: A change from one semiotic system to another semiotic system. Here written text is turned into visual text, Linguistic signs are replaced by the Visual signs. Few of Shakespearean works have been adopted in Indian films, too. 2003 film  Maqbool  by Vishal Bhardwaj is an adaptation of Shakespeare's one of the best tragedies, Macbeth. Maqbool was Vishal Bhardwaj's second film as a director. The film had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival. And it was also screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. The film has a great star-cast: Pankaj Kapoor (he wins two awards for this role), Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, and Piyush Mishra. The...
