Meh-FILM: Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)

Today I want to talk about 1999 English film Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai  written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. The film was an international co-production between the United States, France, Germany and Japan GENRE: CRIME DRAMA DURATION: 116 Minutes WHAT IS IT ABOUT? The film is about an African-American Mafia hit man who models himself after the samurai of old Japan finds himself targeted for death by the mob. It stars Forest Whitaker as the title character, a hitman for the mafia who adheres to the ancient warrior code of the samurai, as outlined in the book of Yamamoto Tsunetomo's recorded sayings, Hagakure. WHY SHOULD WE WATCH IT? It is a crime-drama, very interesting use of violence. Developing intertextual narrative by constant references to cartoon, The Itchy & Scratchy Show and books like, Rashomon and Hagakure . Very interestingly used background music that provides the pace to visibly simple and static sequences. Constant referencing to the pas...

Meh-FILM: The Tenants Downstairs (2016)

T oday I will be talking about 2016 Vietnamese film The Tenants Downstairs  directed by Adam Tsuei in his first directorial venture. The film is based on the novel of the same title by Giddens Ko   GENRE: BLACK COMEDY-HORROR DURATION: 120 Minutes   WHAT IS IT ABOUT? The film is about a sadistic landlord, Chang Chia-chun, who manipulates the lives of his tenants through a network of surveillance cameras installed throughout the building. But when the police find out, the truth was more disturbing and surprising for us. WHY SHOULD WE WATCH IT? The film is an excellent example of audience manipulation. Watch it if you are into gory and graphic violence. Witness the performances of all the major actors. Mind-blowing plot twist which turns this gory tell into a story of revenge. Share your feelings while seeing a film in the comment box.   If you are a fan of cinema from various parts of the world and you like to see newer narratives and plots, ...

iReview: A Hundred Years of Culture and Anarchy by R. Williams

Hello and Welcome Today, I would like to talk about the chapter entitled A HUNDRED YEARS OF CULTURE AND ANARCHY (pgs. 3-8) from the Book CULTURE AND MATERIALISM (2005[1980], Verso) by RAYMOND WILLIAMS. About the author: (31 August 1921 – 26 January 1988) Raymond Henry Williams was a Welsh socialist writer, academic, novelist and critic influential within the New Left and in wider culture. His writings on politics, culture, the media and literature contributed to the Marxist critique of culture and the arts. What the chapter is about? The title of the chapter refers to the book Culture and Anarchy by Matthew Arnold. Williams discusses at length the Hyde Park event during the Workers’ Right to Vote movement. Williams also extensively quotes Arnold’s views and provides counter arguments. The chapter does not directly address the key theme of the book but develops a ground to talk about it. The chapter establishes the foundation for the book's critical exploration of the interplay betw...
